Coolie Trailer Breakdown: Is This a Tribute or a Rip-Off of His 80s Hits? π₯π₯
People went wild on the internet when the Coolie trailer was released. The followers of Rajinikanth went crazy with the trailer all over WhatsApp groups, Instagram reel, and Twitter (or X as they now refer to it). However, there was one question going around along with all the celebrations, and it was- “Is Coolie a celebration of Rajini golden era or it is a rehashed slurry of his 80s numbers?”
Being a person who used to watch the old Rajini mass films in Doordarshan every Sunday I had my own kind of emotions. So, let us take apart this trailer - and see it it is a nostalgic homage or a JOKE of a flick still riding on old tropes. π€
First Impressions: Goosebumps or DΓ©jΓ Vu? π―✨
And with the trademark whistling sound the trailer begins and you suddenly get goosebumps as it is a trademark Rajini intro. Slowly the camera is zooming in on him when he is wearing the typical white shirt, veshti tied up, and sunglasses on. The music in the background? Nicely=False running Vintage mass.
The trailer seems to be yanking all the right levers on the surface to put a smile on the face of the fans. Hold up a minute - aren t we reading this entry style again and again? This is the best intro formula, that Rajini has played, ever since from Annamalai till Baasha.
And is it exciting? Absolutely.
Is it Original? Hmmm… and this is where opinions are being separated.
Dialogues: Vintage Punch or Rehashed Lines? π£️π
Another good thing about the trailer is the dialogue by Rajini who says, “Coolie na velai alla da, adhu oru adhigaram!“ (Coolie is not a job, it’s a power!).
Sounds big, does it? However, when you think about it, this type of his mass one-liners is a direct reference to the older dialogues. Remember a line in Baasha, that is, Naan oru thadava sonna nooru thadava sonna madhiri.
Whereas the fans are applauding such dialogues as mass moment, the critics are calling such dialogues as time machine and being trapped there in 2004 buying one line after another to remind the audience with what the past times had been. It is a tribute? Or a cautious act on the part of the makers to be safe rather than sorry?
Visuals & Cinematography: Retro Aesthetic or Low-Effort Recreation? π¬π§
The color grading and the art direction of the trailer is clearly meant to give the viewers a feel of 80s Chennai the smoke filled tea shops, the railway stations, the old cycle rickshaws and the coolie union scenes.
On the one hand, fans adore the nostalgic visual realization other users say that this is not a modern look. Its some scenes remind one of the movies like Mullum Malarum or Uzhaippali almost as though they have been updated only with the camera.
One would find a fine balance between the paying of a tribute to another hit and then going over the trodden path without any new additions to it. That is the problematic area that the visuals of Coolie appear to be treading on.
Action Sequences: Old Wine in a New Bottle? π₯πΎ
Fan service is evident in the fight scenes, as shown in the trailer, of Rajini swinging chains, flipping villains over his shoulder, and slickly lighting a beedi after the fight.
However, there is a twist though, these are the same punches we have observed (in fact frame by frame) in previous Rajini movies. Of course, the special effects are better, however, the choreography resembles that of a copy paste.
Other fans counter, that is what it is all about. It is a tribute!” To some though, it is seen as a result of creative laziness, to capitalize on old fashioned nostalgia by recycling old action blocks.
Music & BGM: Anirudh’s Magic or Just Safe Mass Beats? πΆπ₯
Anirudh has come up with another pumping background score which lifts the energy in the trailer to new level. But even his music is an eye-raiser, it appears to be too much based on the remix of ancient BGM templates of Rajini, with banging drumbeats and ancient whistled hooks. In my opinion, quality of Coolie BGM is not equal as VIKRAM or LEO or JAILER.
Although it certainly hits the spot when it comes to building all the hype, one gets an impression that the soundtrack could have experimented with new styles. Well, Rajini is a superstar who has reinvented himself many times. Then why should not the music say so?
Tribute or Rip-Off? — The Verdict π§⚖️
This is the frank truth - the trailer of Coolie is on a tighter rope of remembrance and recycling.
To hardcore Rajini admirers (who included my uncle whose living room has a still cut-out of Rajini) this trailer is a euphoria. It is a love song to the times when Thalaivar used to rule the masses and films were greater than life.
To the younger generation and the cinema critics, it almost feels like the makers are being too safe and are just drawing on established and tested formulas as they fail to take any risks of trying anything new.
Then, does it count as a tribute? Yes.
Is it also rip-off? Maybe.
Why This Debate Matters π£️π₯
This is a bigger argument than about a single trailer It is about the treatment of the legends in Kollywood. Are we honoring their legacy by giving them roles that touch the fringe? And are we putting them through a nostalgia trap and selling tickets?
Rajinikanth is a tested actor who needs scripts that put his charm into some challenge and providing him new platforms to perform on instead of recreating old successes. The Coolie trailer, though, promising, puts Doubts in my mind as to whether our filmmakers are prepared to move on with the superstar.
Final Thoughts — What’s Your Take? π€π¬
Having followed Rajini all my life, I am both excited and nervous. I will still continue to attend FDFS (First Day First Show) and cheer with Thalaivar but I hope the entire film will be so much more than the trailer.
And what do you think? Is the Coolie trailer euthanasia of the golden age of Rajini or is it the makers just doing an easy job by cashing in on his old fame?
