Thalapathy Vijay vs Other South Indian Stars: Who Rules the Box Office?
Unless you are not a fan of South Indian movies, you cannot have heard about the name of Thalapathy Vijay. He is however not the only superstar shining on the silver screen. And then there is Allu Arjun with his swag, Yash with an intense look, the evergreen legend Rajinikanth, and of course, Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, and Prabhas who have all carved their name.
But the biggest question which fans keep arguing about is, which of them is the real box office king of South India? Simple, let us wade in to this in a friendly manner. Let us just pretend that we are sitting down getting chai chat, all right?
Thalapathy Vijay The Crowd Puller
The transformation of Vijay as a chocolate boy in the film Poove Unakkaga to a mass hero in recent movies of his such as Mersal, Master and Leo is really inspiring. He is not popular in Tamil Nadu only but now he has a fan base in Kerala, Karnataka and also in some areas of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
There is one thing about Vijay, that is, he is consistent. His films perform very well in the box office with most of them recording excellent hits. For instance:
- Master (2021), in spite of pandemic constraints earned more than 250 crore in the global markets.
- With more than Rs. 600 crore in worldwide collections, Leo (2023) has not only set the record but has also gone ahead and broken it.
The subsequent word of mouth and his strong following ensure that his openings are always huge. His star power is so high that even his mediocre films do good numbers.
Allu Arjun The smooth star that has a Pan-India brand Allure
The rise in the popularity of Allu Arjun was off the charts after pushpa: The rise. His style, his performance during the dance and in the midst of the conversations made him a sensation in the country. Even he, who had never ever watched the Telugu films, started calling him, by his name, Pushpa Raj.
- The movie earned 350 crores and more in the worldwide market and added another reference point of how the Telugu movies can get a national face.
- After the movie has now surpassed the Rs. 2000 crores in total global earnings, Allu Arjun has blasted onto the screen with a bang and has definitely joined Vijay and others in the race to the box office throne.
Yash: The Rocky Bhai of Indian Cinema
Yash already was a household name in Karnataka, but because of the release of the two movies, which are titled as "KGF" and after, he became pan-India. This coarse and tough look and speeches of masses was spell bounding in India.
The film KGF Chapter 2 had gained over Rs. 1200 crore in the box office all over the world. It is no hit, that is a kind of phenomenon!
He does not act in too many films like Vijay or Allu Arjun, but when he presents, it storms and crashes the box office.
Rebel Star to Baahubali Prabhas
Prabhas was not an unknown name in the Tollywood but following last year, he became an international figure with the film Baahubali. Baahubali 2 and 1 collected over 2000 crores in the market around the world.
But after that there were films like, Saaho and Radhe Shyam, which flopped. However, the recent movie Salaar brought a bit of the box office magic.
Prabhas is not a minor player yet and with the help of his next cinema (Kalki 2898 AD) he may become great again.
Rajinikanth: The Thalaivar of Indian Cinema
It is impossible even to speak about South Indian stars without referring to the legend of Rajinikanth. He has been ruling hearts more than 40 years ago.
His recent movie Jailer (2023) earned more than Rs.600 crore in cash which is a testimony that Thalaivar is beyond his age.
He is not in any contention to have the title of the young box office king but the weight that he has in the ticket counters are hard to match.
Who then is the real king of Box Office?
Well there are ways to look at it al-right:
- Most Consistent? Thalapathy Vijay.
- What are the greatest Pan-India songs? Yash (KGF) vs Prabhas (Baahubali).
- Most StylishStar and the Future Star? Allu Arjun.
- Steele Evergreen Super Star? Rajinikanth.
On his own scale Vijay scores on a scale of consistency and fan following. I recall that during the first day of the launching of Master we went and watched it in the theatre and it became a celebratory occasion. Family also found their way to stick together and in the entrance scene, people were dancing. It is not just a popular fad!
However, the heights that Yash and Prabhas have climbed to in their mega hits cannot be neglected.
Final Thoughts
The thing is that most likely South Indian cinema is privileged enough to realise that by the end of the day it has not two but numerous stars that do proffer an offer somewhere. The Vijay, the toughness of Yash, the stylishness of Allu Arjun or flashiness of Prabhas, each of them provide the colour to Indian cinema.
We can only enjoy them without making a comparison. The friendlier arguments of fans, however, will also not come to an end, yes, that is also part of the entertainment!
