Coolie Leaked Plot: Is Rajinikanth's Character Just Another Baasha Remix?

When the coolie teaser was released, the fans worldwide went crazy. The swag, the background score, the old school Rajini walk, and it was as though Thalaivar has returned in full form. With a so called but not so secret leak of a plot line of the supposed Coolie tuning the waves on the internet, they are asking a big question: Is Rajinikanth in Coolie just another remix of his legendary Baasha character?

So what do we know, what is rumoured and what should we be excited or worried about.

🎥 What We Know So Far About Coolie

The basics out of the way; first. Coolie is the film of the maker of Kaithi, Master, and Leo Lokesh Kanagaraj. Anirudh on music and a massy title like Coolie, expectations are bound to penetrate the skies.

Rajinikanth even appeared in the teaser itself, in a hard and gritty indusrial landscape, surrounded by gold chains, a smirk on his face, and with some retro vibes. To a lot of fans, it instantly recalled Baasha, Padayappa and Mannan.

However, there is some hint of something deeper, and more familiar based on leak of bits of the plot.

🕵️‍♂️ What Does the Leaked Plot Say?

There has been a string of reports doing the rounds on fan pages and movie forums about the leaked plot as such:

  • It is acting of Rajinikanth who is a former don, who leads low profile with work in a busy market as a coolie (labourer).
  • He is full of violence, power, and betrayal, which he does not want to show his present.
  • His dark side becomes prominent when someone launches an attack or hurts the people he loves.
  • Flashback shows his criminal history, coded morality and a really huge turn where he is betrayed by people he knew.

Sounds familiar?

You have probably already intuitively linked the dots in case you are a Baasha fan.

😮 Wait… Isn’t This Just Baasha 2.0?

That is, quite frankly speaking, yes and no.

The construction of a non-aggressive man born in the world of violence is nothing new, at least, in Tamil films. Baasha made it legendary. The emotional flash back, the metamorphosis, the solo commando scene all of this became a signature of Rajini.

Now, it looks like Coolie is borrowing that format once again, but this time with a different Lokesh twist. It is perceived as a homage to some fans. Others fear that it is a re-warmed meal of ancient cuisine.

But hold on a sec--here is where it gets interesting.

💥 Why Audiences Might Still Love It

We must recall: Baasha was released in 1995. This is nearly thirty years back.

An entirely different generation that has missed watching that movie in cinema. To them, Coolie could be a brand new story- even though the main idea has actually been similar.

Moreover, a modern twist is coming given Lokesh Kanagaraj is in charge. His directing style is smooth, trendy and hardboiled. The flesh may be brand-new, yet the skeleton be as old as possible.

As an example, what happens in case the flashbacks are grittier? What happens when the don is not ideal, but shady? Imagine the tale goes into the parameters of labour rights, mafiosi in the market or political interference! All those might make Coolie self-sustaining.

🧠 Personal Take: Do We Really Need Something “New” All the Time?

Point-blank truth here. I am a fan of that film because I grew up watching it in his rented VCR during the summer holidays. The attitude, the lyrics, the songs, all these are marked in mind.

Therefore, I did not roll my eyes when I watched the teaser of the film Coolie. I smiled.

There are situations when cinema does not refer to shocking twists or ultrabright plots. It is about emotion, style, and that super hero, who makes you applaud in the theatre. Rajinikanth has based his career on that mass magic.

As long as Coolie gives me that feeling again (even if it was Baasha-driven) I will go there.

🔥 What Makes This Debate So Spicy?

The truth is. The fans of the Tamil cinema are very emphatic. This, especially in case of stars such as Rajinikanth, Vijay, Ajith, or Kamal Haasan, is enough to create full-blown fan wars as even a mere whisper among colleagues can do.

This is why when you say that Coolie is basically a reloaded version of Baasha somebody comes to its rescue as though it were one of its children. This is the intensity of movie culture.

It is not only the diehard fans that are keeping an eye out on Coolie, but even film critics, YouTubers, as well as other movie makers are looking carefully at Coolie. When it works it will become a celebration. Well, what happens when it does not? Well.. the internet will explode anyways.

🤔 Final Word: Remix or Reinvention?

But by the end of the day, we will not get to know the truth until the real release of the film. Leaks about the plot may be erroneous. They may be correct, but then it makes a difference how they performed it.

Yes, Coolie could be like tints of Baasha. Or maybe that is the point. Perhaps Lokesh has a tendency of paying homage to the golden era of the mass movies, but has his own spice about it.

But this is where we need to be a little patient and instead of wanting to choose between remix and original, let us just wait, enjoy the hype and see Rajini surprise us once again.
